BUKEDE, (Examiner) Leaders from Bukedi sub-region have urged President Yoweri Museveni to bolster efforts in combating corruption, particularly within the political echelons, to ensure Ugandans reap the benefits of their tax contributions.

During the inauguration of the newly constructed priest’s house at Kiyeye Church of Uganda in West Budama South constituency, Tororo district, Bishop Samuel Bogere Egessa of Bukedi diocese commended the government’s strides in tackling corruption. However, he emphasized that corruption not only constitutes a moral sin but also severely hampers the delivery of essential services to Ugandans.

“Uganda would have achieved far greater prosperity today if not for corruption,” remarked Rev. Bogere. “This country is wealthy, yet the majority are impoverished. What some term as embezzlement, I call outright theft.”

The Bishop implored President Museveni to intensify efforts in rooting out corruption and ensuring justice for all victims affected by the scourge.

“We appreciate the steps taken thus far, but more perpetrators remain at large,” added Rev. Bogere.

Echoing these sentiments, Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs Jacob Oboth Oboth stressed the imperative of addressing corruption without bias.

“Even if allegations of corruption involve myself, the law must prevail,” Minister Oboth affirmed. “We aspire for a nation where every citizen can take pride. Corruption undermines government programs, hindering progress in critical sectors like healthcare and infrastructure.”

Minister Oboth lamented the pervasive impact of corruption, likening it to a malignant cancer eroding the nation’s fabric.

“Our roads remain neglected, hospitals lack essential medicines, and social services suffer due to this insidious vice,” he emphasized. “We must unite with the President in this fight against corruption, and refrain from merely lamenting those apprehended.”

This call to action comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings involving three ministers, including one from Bukedi sub-region, currently in custody facing corruption charges.
