KAMPALA, (Examiner) – Mulago National Referral Hospital has launched an initiative to expand minimally invasive surgery and opened a state-of-the-art endoscopy center, backed by the Republic of Korea. This effort aims to bolster Uganda’s surgical capabilities and enhance patient outcomes.

At the commissioning ceremony, Uganda’s Minister of Health, Jane Ruth Aceng, highlighted that the expansion has enabled the country to acquire advanced technology, thanks to Korean support. This development is expected to elevate the quality of healthcare in Ugandan hospitals to international standards. Aceng emphasized that this initiative promotes collaboration and knowledge exchange between Uganda and Korea, strengthening the healthcare systems of both nations.

In addition, Minister Aceng announced that Korea has donated USD 10 million to automate hospital activities through an integrated management system, improving infection control and transforming the hospital into a highly efficient institution.

Sung Soo Park, the South Korean Ambassador to Uganda, noted that Uganda has been a priority partner for Korea since their diplomatic relations began in 1963. He pointed out that Uganda’s life expectancy has risen from 47 years three decades ago to 63 years today, underscoring the growing need for quality medical services. Ambassador Park announced a grant of USD 500,000 from the Korean government to enhance minimally invasive surgery at Mulago, which includes donations of X-ray machines, endoscopy and laparoscopy equipment, surgical gowns, and other medical supplies.

Dr. Chung Hyukjun of KOICA Global Corporation, who is serving at Mulago, demonstrated the efficacy of the new laparoscopy and endoscopy equipment, showcasing its ability to perform surgeries with minimal pain for patients. He remarked that Uganda now boasts the best center for endoscopy and laparoscopy surgery in East and Central Africa, second only to South Africa.
