Summary:

  • Speaker of Parliament Anita Among led a parliamentary team to inspect Mandela National Stadium. Impressed with UPDF’s work, she called for a forensic audit to assess expenses. Funding is required to complete the project, with Parliament urging the release of the remaining amount.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among led a parliamentary delegation, accompanied by Commissioner Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, to oversee progress at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, today.

During the visit, Speaker Among, guided by army officials under the supervision of Sports State Minister Hon. Peter Ogwang, expressed satisfaction with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineering Brigade’s work.

“I am truly impressed by what the UPDF Engineering Brigade has accomplished here,” she remarked.

To determine the project’s financial status, Parliament will initiate a forensic audit. Additionally, Speaker Among instructed Hon. Mpuuga to thoroughly assess the facility and report any areas needing improvement to Parliament.

“We will conduct a forensic audit to review expenditures and assess additional requirements due to proposed changes,” she stated.

Minister Ogwang instructed contractors to complete pending tasks within two weeks to prepare for the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in June.

Furthermore, the stadium plays a crucial role in Uganda’s preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

With Shs80 billion already allocated to the project, the remaining Shs97 billion is needed to finalize construction. Last week, Parliament urged Finance State Minister Hon. Amos Lugoloobi to release the outstanding Shs17.7 billion to facilitate completion.

Upon Hon. Ogwang’s request, Speaker Among ordered the immediate removal of Pioneer Bus Limited vehicles parked in stadium spaces ahead of inspections.
