Uganda and UAE’s Sharjah Chamber Sign MOU for Kidepo Airport and Tourism Development

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Government of Uganda and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the United Arab Emirates yesterday evening at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

President Museveni expressed his approval of the MOU, highlighting the strengthened relations between Uganda and the Gulf countries, which have seen significant growth recently. He emphasized the substantial investment potential between Uganda and the Gulf nations that should be harnessed.

The MOU, signed by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Works and Transport, Civil Aviation Authority, Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, and Uganda Wildlife Authority, alongside the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, includes plans for the construction of Kidepo International Airport near Kidepo National Park and the development of tourist hotels within the park to enhance Uganda’s tourism sector and economy.

H.E Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of the Chamber, informed President Museveni that construction of the airport is scheduled to commence in August 2024, with a commitment to timely and quality completion.

The ceremony was also attended by Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Internal Affairs; Gen. Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport; Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities; and H.E Abdalla Hassan Alshamsi, UAE Ambassador to Uganda.
