Uganda joins the global commemoration of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture today. The national event is being held at the Railway Grounds in Kampala, with the theme “Torture Free Communities for All.” Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister for Internal Affairs, is the Chief Guest.

Crispin Kaheru, a member of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), stated that this year’s theme emphasizes the commission’s goal of creating a safe and humane environment free from torture for all Ugandans. He added that it highlights the necessity of collaborative efforts towards eradicating torture and building communities where all individuals, regardless of their diversity, are safe from inhumane treatment.

Kaheru further explained to Examiner that the celebrations aim to raise awareness about all forms of torture, support victims, and promote accountability among duty bearers. “The coalition against torture and the Uganda Human Rights Commission are committed to sustained action in combating torture, striving to attain a torture-free community for all,” he said.

The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, observed annually on June 26, reminds people that human torture is not only unacceptable but also a crime.
