Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to the Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NCIPs), marking significant progress across various sectors. Amb. Richard Kabonero, Uganda’s National Coordinator, highlighted these achievements during a recent virtual meeting convened by Rwanda.

Amb. Kabonero expressed gratitude to Rwanda for hosting the meeting and underscored the bilateral consultations held in Kigali and Nairobi, signaling renewed dedication to NCIPs and regional infrastructure projects.

He provided updates on Uganda’s coordinated efforts, including advancements in ICT, infrastructure development, Standard Gauge Railways (SGR), project financing, private sector involvement, and oil refinery development. Key achievements mentioned were the operationalization of the One Network Area (ONA) for unified voice, data, and SMS services, progress in cross-border broadband connectivity, and commitments to regional satellite communication initiatives.

The meeting, chaired by Ms. Clementine Mukeka of Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, brought together representatives from NCIP member states, including Kenya and South Sudan. Dr. Alice Yalla of Kenya highlighted their decade of achievements, while Hon. Biel Jock Thuch of South Sudan expressed eagerness for deeper collaboration.

Discussions centered on implementing joint Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and frameworks, such as the single tourist visa and ONA MoU, to enhance regional integration and security. Member states reaffirmed their commitment to these agreements, exploring innovative approaches to strengthen collaboration.

The NCIP initiative aims to bolster regional infrastructure, including transportation, energy, and ICT networks, fostering economic growth and sustainable development across East Africa. Key projects encompass railway and road development, oil pipeline construction, and modernizing ports, all aimed at enhancing trade efficiency and regional connectivity.
