LIMPOPO, (Examiner) – Sulaiman Kamya, a 29-year-old Ugandan national, has been handed two life sentences for the vicious murder of Joshua and Rita Mutaasa, a couple from Limpopo, in what authorities describe as a revenge-driven attack.

Kamya had initially sought to purchase the Mutaasas’ silver BMW sedan, agreeing to pay in installments until the full amount was settled. However, when he later faced financial difficulties, he demanded a refund. The couple, promising to repay him later, faced Kamya’s aggression as he forcibly entered their residence, demanding immediate reimbursement.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, spokesperson for the Limpopo police, recounted how Kamya not only killed the couple but also set fire to their home, plundering their possessions, including the disputed vehicle.

The charred remains of Joshua and Rita Mutaasa were discovered on January 4, 2019, in their Wildebeeslaagte home in Northam. Forensic analysis revealed that the couple had been brutally attacked before the arson.

Kamya was swiftly apprehended in Rustenburg, North West, thanks to diligent investigative work. Crucial evidence, including one of the victim’s cellphones found at Kamya’s residence and bloodstained garments, contributed to his conviction.

During the trial, it was established that Kamya’s actions were premeditated acts of vengeance. He faced charges of double murder and house robbery, resulting in the Modimolle Regional Court imposing two life sentences along with an additional 15 years for the robbery.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner, commended the dedicated efforts of the Northam police, emphasizing that Kamya’s sentencing sends a clear message that such egregious acts of violence will not be tolerated. She reaffirmed the commitment of law enforcement to prevent such tragedies and bring perpetrators to justice.
