Summary:

  • Uganda’s military pledges neutrality in the 2026 elections, emphasizing its role in ensuring security and refraining from political endorsements, including regarding the potential candidacy of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

In a statement to Examiner, Uganda’s military, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), assured the public of its impartiality in the upcoming 2026 general elections. Brigadier Felix Kulayigye, spokesperson for the UPDF, emphasized that the army remains apolitical and will not endorse any specific candidate.

“Our primary objective is to ensure the security of the nation during the electoral process, safeguarding against any threats or external influences,” Kulayigye stated during an interview with the African Institute for Investigative Journalism.

Responding to inquiries regarding the potential candidacy of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the current Chief of Defense Forces, Kulayigye reiterated the UPDF’s commitment to non-partisanship. He clarified that the UPDF’s role is to support law enforcement agencies, such as the police, in maintaining order during elections, rather than intervening in political matters.

While Gen Muhoozi has publicly expressed interest in running for president, Kulayigye stressed that the UPDF does not intervene in electoral politics. He emphasized that statements made by individuals, even high-ranking military officials, on social media do not reflect official positions of the national army.

Addressing concerns about Gen Muhoozi’s previous involvement in political commentary, which is prohibited under UPDF regulations, Kulayigye noted that such activities occurred during the general’s tenure as a Presidential Advisor on Special Operations. He argued that Gen Muhoozi’s actions in that capacity should not be conflated with his performance as Chief of Defense Forces.

As Uganda prepares for the 2026 elections, the UPDF’s commitment to neutrality aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure a peaceful transition of power.
