Summary:
- The outgoing Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, has provided homes for the elderly in Masaka City, expressing concern over the government’s perceived neglect of vulnerable individuals.
The departing Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament has overseen the construction of homes for senior citizens in Masaka City.
On Monday, Mathias Mpuuga, the legislator representing Nyendo-Mukungwe, officially handed over a minimum of three residences located in the villages of Kiyimbwe and Kirumba in Masaka City.
During the handover ceremony, Mpuuga criticized the government for what he perceived as a “failure to support the vulnerable.”
Mpuuga expressed dissatisfaction, stating, “The government only extends consideration to those aged 80 and above, while civil servants retire at 60. The Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) should be accessible to individuals starting from the age of 60.”
Highlighting the citizens’ responsibility, Mpuuga emphasized that the government ought to care for its people, given their contributions through taxes.
The opposition legislator pledged to continue assisting his constituents using what he referred to as his “personal funds.”
Addressing the gathering, Masaka City Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Juliet Kakande urged the youth to strive for success in order to support their parents. She cautioned against complacency, emphasizing the uncertainty of future leaders who may not be as supportive.
Kakande also denounced local leaders involved in collaborating with wealthy individuals to unlawfully acquire land from the elderly.
Expressing gratitude, Teddy Tushabe, one of the beneficiaries, thanked Mpuuga for building her a house, recounting how part of her family land was sold by one of her sons. She expressed relief that the small piece left was utilized to provide her with a home.
Resty Nalwoga, another recipient, revealed that her house’s roof was blown off by the wind. She had been staying at her neighbor’s place until Mpuuga stepped in to assist her. Nalwoga conveyed her thanks, stating, “I thank God that I have a place to sleep now with my grandchildren. We will lead a happy life.”
Mauricia Nalumansi, whose house was destroyed by a hailstorm, shared her contentment, stating, “I live with nine grandchildren, and we are grateful that Mpuuga took an interest in building me a house.”
