Mbale District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | The increased absenteeism of teachers and pupils in hard-to-reach sub-counties in Mbale District has been attributed to poor road conditions, according to education authorities in the district. Lydia Musunga, the Mbale District Education Officer, highlighted this issue during a budget conference at Mbale District Lukhobo Hall on October 31, 2023.
Musunga pointed out that sub-counties such as Busano, Bufumbo, Wabale, and Bubyangu are experiencing high rates of absenteeism among pupils and teachers. The deteriorated state of the roads leading to these schools hinders regular attendance, especially during rainy periods. This absenteeism is expected to result in poor performance in this year’s primary leaving examination.
To address the issue, Mohamed Mafabi, the Mbale District LCV chairperson, mentioned that the district has acquired biometric machines for installation in all government institutions. These machines aim to address the problem of staff absenteeism.
Additionally, Mafabi explained that the central government has allocated one billion shillings for road maintenance to all districts, with Mbale already receiving 500 million. This funding will be used to rehabilitate roads, particularly in hard-to-reach areas with poor conditions.
