Entebbe, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Yesterday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni welcomed Dr. Jama Musse Jama, a Special Envoy from the Republic of Somaliland, to State House-Entebbe.
During their discussion, President Museveni agreed to take on the role of mediator in the efforts to bring together Somaliland and Somalia.
Somaliland, officially known as the Republic of Somaliland, is a self-declared sovereign state in the Horn of Africa, though it lacks international recognition as an independent nation and is considered part of Somalia under international law.
President Museveni firmly expressed his opposition to the idea of Somaliland seceding from Somalia, emphasizing that he views it as strategically incorrect.
He stressed the importance of moving away from identity-based politics and encouraged both Somalia and Somaliland to embrace politics centered on common interests. He believes this shift will lead to social and economic transformation for their citizens.
President Museveni also expressed his willingness to engage in trade with Somaliland, envisioning mutual economic benefits. He highlighted the significance of not relying solely on internal markets and urged Somaliland and Somalia to unite, trade with each other, and expand their trade partnerships with other African nations.
Dr. Jama extended gratitude to President Museveni for his efforts in promoting peace in Somalia and sought his assistance in resolving the disputes between Somalia and Somaliland. Additionally, he expressed support for the idea of the East African Community expanding its reach to include Somalia.
