ABUJA, Nigeria | THE BLACK EXAMINER | The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H. E Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, held meetings with key representatives to discuss regional initiatives. In a session with the Chief Executive Officer of Sightsavers International, Dr. Caroline Harper, and High Representative of the Coalition for the Sahel, Mr. Hamadi Meimou, President Touray emphasized the Commission’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access in collaboration with Member States, even in the face of sanctions on certain military regimes.
Dr. Harper highlighted Sightsavers’ global successes and sought ECOWAS support to expand their activities in West Africa, particularly in Mali and Burkina-Faso.
In a separate meeting with Mr. Meimou and the Coalition for the Sahel delegation, President Touray assured full support for their mandate, acknowledging the challenges of insecurity, climate change, and unconstitutional changes of government in the Sahel. He outlined ECOWAS’ efforts to address these issues, emphasizing the commitment to democratic values and the imposition of sanctions to deter illegal takeovers.
Mr. Meimou expressed gratitude for ECOWAS’ role in promoting peace and stability in the region and outlined the objective of his visit, seeking advice on the Sahel’s general situation and initiating an Intra-African Dialogue within the Coalition for the Sahel framework to foster peace and prosperity.
