Police in Kisoro District have commenced an investigation into a shooting incident resulting in the fatality of Uwimana Rashid Baker, a 35-year-old resident of Rugyendabare village in Nyundo sub-county.
The incident transpired at Chameleon Hotel, where Baker allegedly fell victim to a fatal gunshot fired by PC Wilson Bazimaziki, a security guard.
Per police reports, Baker was shot after purportedly attempting to harm Bazimaziki with a panga while evading arrest. The shooting unfolded amidst a confrontation between Baker and Komuhangi Stephen, a shopkeeper in Rugyendabare village. Armed with a panga, Baker reportedly assaulted Stephen, gripping his neck and demanding money. Residents intervened, rescuing Stephen on the night of December 1, 2023, at around 8:00 PM.
In the course of the confrontation, Baker sustained a gunshot wound to the leg (tibia). The recovered panga was found on him after his fall. Despite swift transport to Kisoro Hospital, Baker succumbed to his injuries en route. Due to his assault on Komuhangi Stephen’s life, police have classified Baker as a security threat.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, affirmed the initiation of a General Enquiry File (GEF) to comprehensively investigate the circumstances surrounding Baker’s demise. A team of officers has been dispatched to the crime scene to meticulously examine and document the area.
Maate mentioned that pertinent witness statements have been obtained, and Komuhangi Stephen has undergone a medical examination. Furthermore, a postmortem has been conducted to provide additional insights into the events leading to Baker’s death.
