Martial Tumusiime, spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Police, verified the incident that transpired around 11:50 pm on December 31, 2023, at Nyamga Central cell, Nyanga ward, Kabwohe Division in Sheema Municipality.
The victim, identified as Fortune Tushemerirwe, and the alleged perpetrator, Dickson Agaba, a 36-year-old peasant residing in the same area, were named in the confirmation.
According to reports, on the day of the incident, the deceased and her brother were at their uncle Agaba’s residence, engaging in New Year’s celebrations with drinks and dance.
Benson Tumwebaze, a boda boda rider and the father of the deceased, reported the case to the police, stating that a dispute erupted, leading the suspect to wield a panga and injure his nephew, identified as Tumwebaze, on the right hand.
In an attempt to rescue her brother, Tushemerirwe intervened, but the alleged assailant fatally struck her on the head with an old hoe, characterized by a broken handle.
Tumusiime told Examiner that a team comprising homicide and scene of crime officers visited the location, recorded statements, and recovered and exhibited the weapons used by the alleged assailant.
The victim’s body was transported to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination, while investigations into the incident continued.
