Summary:
- The son of Somalia’s President was involved in a fatal accident in Istanbul, resulting in the death of motorcyclist Yunus Emre Göçer, with concerns raised about the accuracy of the initial police report and the responsible individual remaining unarrested.
In Istanbul, Turkey, a tragic incident involving the son of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud unfolded on November 30, 2023, resulting in the untimely death of a motorcyclist named Yunus Emre Göçer at the exit of the Eurasia Tunnel.
Examiner has learnt that, surveillance cameras recorded the heart-wrenching collision on Kennedy Avenue towards Zeytinburnu. Göçer, 38, had slowed down and attempted to pull over when Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, operating a car with registration number 06 CD 4581, struck the motorcycle from behind.
The impact threw Göçer, a father of two, onto the road, causing severe injuries. Despite prompt intervention by emergency services and the police, Göçer succumbed to his injuries six days later at Samatya Training and Research Hospital.
Following the incident, Mr. Mohamud was questioned by the police and subsequently released after providing a statement. However, concerns arose about the accuracy of the initial traffic police report, which claimed the motorcyclist lost control without reviewing any footage. Yusuf Özsoy, a close friend of Göçer, expressed frustration, stating that video evidence obtained by their lawyer contradicts the police report, clearly showing the car approaching without braking.
Özsoy emphasized that Göçer was hit, injured, and ultimately lost his life due to the collision. Despite ongoing legal proceedings, the individual responsible for the tragedy remains unarrested.
Göçer’s body has been returned to his family, and as a tribute and gesture of solidarity, friends on motorbikes accompanied his remains in front of the Forensic Medicine Institute. The final rites for Yunus Emre Göçer will take place at Gümüşsuyu Cemevi after the funeral prayer.
