Dr. Nelson Musoba, the Director General of Uganda AIDS Commission, revealed that truck drivers in the country have the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Despite progress with the 95-95-95 strategy, key populations, specific groups or individuals with higher vulnerability to acquiring and transmitting HIV, require more attention.

Among these key populations, truck drivers stand out due to their mobile lifestyle and behavior. As they frequently cross borders and may not always be with their spouses, their HIV prevalence remains significantly high, ranging between 15% and 20%.

The national HIV prevalence in Uganda is 5.4%, but among truck drivers, it surpasses double that rate. Their lifestyle puts them at a higher risk of contracting HIV and makes them potent vectors for transmitting the virus to others.

To address this issue, the North Star Alliance, an organization providing healthcare to mobile populations like truck drivers and sex workers, launched a five-year strategic plan in Kampala.Dr. Musoba commended partners like North Star Alliance for complementing the government’s efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

He highlighted the significance of ensuring that truck drivers can easily access services like testing, condoms, and refills without returning to their home countries. This approach is a crucial component of the HIV response.

The North Star Alliance’s five-year strategic plan aims to improve access to health services for truck drivers and sex workers across borders. It includes provisions for HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other common diseases. The plan also emphasizes the need to build systems for resource mobilization and program expansion in Uganda. In her speech, Dr. Ruth Aceng, the Health Minister, lauded the five-year plan as a powerful tool for driving positive change.

It represents a shared vision for a healthier Uganda and a better future for all. Emphasizing unity and purpose, she encouraged collaboration to build a stronger, more resilient healthcare system that leaves no one behind.
