Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Dan Odongo, the Executive Director of Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), has assured the public that examination papers remain secure in their custody and inaccessible to unauthorized individuals. This statement came a day after six individuals were remanded to Luzira prison on accusations of examination malpractice by Buganda Road Court Judge Ronald Kayizzi.

Odongo clarified that what these individuals shared was not the actual examination but something purportedly related to PLE. He emphasized that the belief that anyone associated with UNEB has access to examination papers is untrue.

Addressing journalists on the commencement of the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) Examinations, Odongo cautioned candidates, parents, and teachers against exam malpractice. He urged head teachers to personally conduct candidate briefings, as their communication carries great weight.

The 2023 UCE examinations officially began with the candidates’ briefing sessions, and they will commence writing exam papers on Monday, the 16th. A total of 364,470 candidates were registered for UCE exams this year, with 3,863 examination centers across the country.

Regarding outstanding school fee balances, Odongo encouraged parents to address this matter with school authorities well in advance to prevent candidate inconvenience during exams. He stated that the board would work with schools to help recover fees from defaulting candidates even after exams.

Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, revealed that territorial commanders and UNEB heads in the police have mapped out all examination centers nationwide. He warned all parties involved against misconduct and outlined patrol routes to ensure security and deter disruptive behavior during exams, such as noise pollution and school intrusion.

With Geography papers 1 and 2 scheduled for Monday, UNEB emphasized that candidates should adhere to discipline and stated that they would not intervene or sympathize with those facing strict disciplinary measures imposed by their schools.
