Summary:

  • The IED that exploded in Nabweru was allegedly brought by two young men yesterday after renting that house for three months and left a bag in the room where the explosion took place.

Security agencies on Sunday, December 3, released composite images of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terror suspects behind the planting of two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that went off on Saturday night.

Defence Deputy Spokesperson Col Deo Akiiki in a statement accompanying the two photos said, “Wanted. The ADF terrorists were sent to plant bombs around. If seen, arrest or call the nearest security agency. Sh20m bounty available on each head.”

Akiiki provided more details on the two IEDs that exploded in Kikubamutwe parish in Kabalagala, Makindye Division, and another one in Nabweru in Nansana Municipality in Wakiso District, saying the two were mechanical timer bombs.

“The IED that exploded in Nabweru was allegedly brought by two young men yesterday after renting that house for three months and left a bag in the room where the explosion took place. The IED that exploded in Kabalagala was left on the veranda of a house on a busy street. In both incidents nobody was harmed or killed,” Akiiki said.

He said investigations were continuing and “the general public is called upon to be vigilant and Security conscious as we approach Christmas and New Year festivals. The public has been also advised to put in place security measures, especially on gatherings like bus/taxi parks, places of worship, discos, parties, lodges, and bars among others,” he said.

He called on the media to continue disseminating info and create awareness in the public domain as we fight these terrorists.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire on Sunday said their teams responded to two separate incidents in the Kampala and Wakiso District that raised concerns within the community.

“In Mayor Zone, Kabalagala Parish, Makindye Division, at about 9:00 pm, a business premise specializing in frying chips experienced an incident that led to a blast. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported. Joy Nakasagga, the owner of the business, aged 23, sustained minor injuries but is currently in stable condition. Our expert teams are actively investigating the cause of the blast and updates on the findings will be communicated as soon as possible,” Owoyesigyire said.

He also revealed that “simultaneously, in Nabweru, our bomb squad and forensic services responded to a blast heard around 9:00 pm. The blast occurred in one of the unoccupied rentals. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported. Our team is diligently working to determine the cause of the blast, and further information regarding the next steps will be provided once investigations are complete.”

Police said while these incidents are under investigation, “we urge the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their communities. Your cooperation is crucial in maintaining the safety and security of our neighborhoods.”
