UPDF Speaks Out on Civilian Killed In Amudat

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has spoken out on an incident where a male adult Lokipurat Amadanyang 40, was shot dead in Amudat district.

Lokipurat was a resident of Lokai village, Arukanes Parish, Lokalesi Sub county in Amudat district.

Maj Isaac Oware said the unfortunate incident happened yesterday at around 11am after a victim was shot by a fighting patrol in brief exchange of fire along River Okilim in Ayole village at the corridor which lies within Pian Upe Game Reserve, in Korite Parish, Girik Sub county, Kween District.

Maj Oware said the he scene of crime was visited and documented by a team of investigators as the body was taken away pending postmortem.

“It is noted that the scene of crime Ayole village/corridor is a fertile area which lies within Pian Upe Game Reserve, targeted by pastoral communities who on several occasions are pushed back to avoid destruction of crops and altercations with cultivators,” Maj Oware said.

UPDF said the area also faces contestation between two communities of Sabiny and Pokot , characterized by untold suffering and loss of innocent lives.

“A case in point, on 16 May 2023, One Mutai Francis a resident of Korite Parish, Girik Sub county,Kween District was killed by suspected Pokot herdsmen,” Maj Oware said.

“We wish to caution communities against grazing, cultivation and poaching in gazzeted areas,” he added.

A board of Inquiry has been instituted to establish circumstances surrounding loss of life and conduct further investigation on the matter/incident.
