Harrison E. Mutikanga is a Ugandan civil engineer, business executive, and academic renowned for his contributions in the field of electricity generation. Currently serving as the Executive Director of the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), Mutikanga oversees the management and academic aspects of the organization.

Background and Education

Harrison Mutikanga was born in 1968 in Kilembe, Kasese District, Uganda, to Late George William Rwimo and Joselyne Mary Rwimo. Raised in a family of five boys and one girl, Mutikanga faced early challenges when his father’s health issues led to the family’s relocation to Kisoro District. Despite these obstacles, he attended various schools, completing his primary education at Kabindi Primary School.

For his secondary education, Mutikanga attended Mutolere Secondary School in Mutolere, Kisoro, for O-Level studies. Later, he transferred to Makerere College School for his A-Level education, specializing in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Subsequently, he pursued a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at Makerere University. Furthering his academic journey, Mutikanga earned a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from a university in the Netherlands.

Career

After graduating from Makerere University, Mutikanga began his career at the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC). His dedication and expertise led him to serve as the area manager in Jinja for 20 years. In 1996, Mutikanga’s career took a pivotal turn when he saw an advertisement for the position of Chief Executive Officer at UEGCL. Among 23 applicants, he emerged as the best candidate and took on the role.

As the head of UEGCL, Mutikanga plays a crucial role in overseeing electricity generation at government-owned power stations, including Nalubaale and Kiira. Additionally, he is responsible for the management of significant projects such as the Isimba Hydroelectric Power Station (183 megawatts) and the Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station (600 megawatts).

Other Responsibilities

Harrison Mutikanga is a devoted family man, married and father to four children. Apart from his leadership role at UEGCL, he has contributed to academia as a part-time lecturer at Uganda Christian University in Mukono. His commitment to professional standards is evident through his membership in the Engineers Registration Board of Uganda. Furthermore, Mutikanga serves as a board member of Malaria Free Uganda, a Public Private Initiative aiming to engage the private sector in malaria elimination in Uganda by 2030, under the government’s Ministry of Health.
