George William Nyombi Thembo, born on July 31, 1964, in Mubende District, Uganda, is a prominent figure in Ugandan politics and currently serves as the Executive Director of Uganda’s Communications Regulator (UCC).
Background and Early Life:
Nyombi Thembo hails from a family of thirteen siblings, born to Erisa Zziwa Bosomungho. His father, originally from the Ndomboli royal family in Zenzeka, Boma, Democratic Republic of Congo, migrated to Uganda in 1924, settling in Kassanda, Singo County, in modern-day Mubende District.
Education:
Nyombi attended Lubiri Secondary School in Kampala for his A-Level education. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Makerere University, the oldest and largest public university in Uganda. Additionally, he holds a diploma in project planning and management from Bradford University in the United Kingdom, a postgraduate diploma in financial management from Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) in Uganda, and a Master of Science degree in Development Economics from UMU.
Work and Politics:
Nyombi’s career began in education as a part-time economics teacher at Uphill College between 1990 and 1996. Subsequently, he served in various capacities, including analyst, planning officer, and senior planning officer for the Uganda Railways Corporation during the 1990s. Between 1995 and 2001, he worked as a Project Manager for the Transport Rehabilitation Project (Railway Component) at Kampala City Council.
In 2001, Nyombi entered elective politics, winning a seat in the Ugandan Parliament to represent Kassanda County South in Mubende District. He was appointed Minister of State for Education and Sports (Primary Education) that same year. Nyombi continued his political journey, serving as a Member of Parliament until 2016.

Ministerial Positions:
Nyombi held various ministerial positions, including Minister of State for Information and Communications Technology (2011-2016). Following his tenure, he took on the role of heading the Uganda Communications Universal Services Access Fund (UCUSAF), formerly known as Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF) at the commission.
Executive Director of UCC:
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, confirmed Nyombi Thembo’s appointment as the new Executive Director of UCC. This appointment comes after Nyombi’s extensive experience in both politics and the telecommunications sector.
