In a significant leadership change, renowned city lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde was officially sworn in as the new president of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) this past Friday, taking over from outgoing president Bernard Oundo. Ssemakadde, known for his unconventional and forward-thinking approach, took his oath of office alongside eight other members of the ULS cabinet during a ceremony at Kampala’s Fairway Hotel.

In his inaugural address, Ssemakadde outlined a clear vision for his term, focusing on revitalizing the ULS and driving reforms within Uganda’s legal framework. He emphasized his commitment to championing justice and reinforcing the rule of law, signaling that his leadership would be dedicated to safeguarding the rights of Ugandans.

“We will not rest until the rights of the people are fully protected and justice is served,” Ssemakadde boldly declared, showcasing his deep-rooted passion for legal advocacy and reform. His presidency promises to be transformative, with a heavy focus on integrity and the relentless pursuit of justice.

Ssemakadde’s swearing-in comes just days after an election that has been described as historic due to the unprecedented voter turnout. Held on September 28, 2024, the elections saw Ssemakadde secure a decisive victory over his main competitor, outgoing ULS Secretary-General Isaac Atukunda, by a margin of 1,211 votes.

Moments after being declared the winner, Ssemakadde addressed the gathering of lawyers, reiterating his commitment to leadership that values integrity and transparency. “I am committed to serving you with integrity and transparency,” he vowed, highlighting his vision of advancing the core values that define the Uganda Law Society: upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and fostering an inclusive and progressive society.

Ssemakadde’s victory was not the only notable outcome from the ULS elections. In the race for the vice presidency, Anthony Asiimwe emerged victorious, defeating Fatuma Omar to take on the role. Meanwhile, Philip Munabi was elected as the new Secretary-General, replacing Isaac Atukunda.

Under Ssemakadde’s leadership, the Uganda Law Society appears poised for a period of significant transformation. With a focus on reform and a renewed dedication to justice, his term promises to steer the organization toward safeguarding citizens’ rights and ensuring the rule of law prevails in Uganda’s legal landscape.
