Haaland still ‘hungry’ after treble feast at Man City

Saturday, September 2, 2023

Erling Haaland, following his hat-trick performance in Manchester City’s 5-1 victory over Fulham, expressed his insatiable hunger for more goals and glory, propelling his team to the top of the Premier League standings.

The Norwegian sensation, with an astonishing 52-goal campaign last season, played a pivotal role in City’s historic treble triumph, which included the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup. Adding the UEFA Super Cup to their accolades, City has begun the new Premier League season with a flawless record.

“I’m always hungry,” remarked Haaland. “It’s a new season, and I’m fully prepared for the challenges ahead.”

Despite their impressive start, City has not yet hit their stride in the new season.

“Every year is like this at this club. We begin a bit slowly and sloppily because we play until the very end of the season, proving we’re the best club,” Haaland explained.

“It’s the nature of the game. We’ll only improve and grow stronger from here.”

With Pep Guardiola sidelined due to back surgery, City struggled to create chances in the first half-hour against Fulham, failing to register a shot on target.

A controversial second goal, scored by Nathan Ake, arrived just before halftime when Manuel Akanji, standing in an offside position, jumped over the ball to distract Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

“The second City goal was a pivotal moment in the game,” said Fulham manager Marco Silva. “A poor decision by the linesman, and the failure to overturn it by the VAR office, is truly baffling.”

Haaland then took the spotlight as he slotted home from Phil Foden’s precise through ball. After missing a penalty against Sheffield United in the previous weekend, Haaland made amends, converting from the spot after Julian Alvarez was brought down in the box.

Haaland completed his seventh City hat-trick with a clinical finish in stoppage time.

“This guy was born to score goals, and he’ll continue doing so throughout his career,” said City assistant boss Juanma Lillo, who temporarily assumed Guardiola’s role.

“While it wouldn’t be surprising if he replicates last season’s numbers, it’s important to note that his impact extends beyond scoring goals. Today, he showcased his ability to provide assists and elevate the performance of his teammates. It’s not just about scoring; it’s about his overall contribution.”
