Newly promoted Uganda Premier League (UPL) outfit Mbale Heroes is on the verge of securing a deal with Kyetume captain Solomon Opolot. The Teso Province defender has been offered a one-year contract by Mbale Heroes, a move he is inclined to accept amid considerations of leaving his current club, recently relegated Mukono side Kyetume.
Negotiations between Opolot and Mbale Heroes have progressed smoothly, with personal terms reportedly nearing agreement, according to reliable sources familiar with the discussions.
Mbale Heroes, two-time winners of the Uganda Cup, have been quiet in the transfer market since their promotion back to the UPL after a lengthy spell in lower divisions. Opolot’s potential arrival is seen as a strategic move to fill the gap left by departing captain Godfrey Lubangakene, who recently joined SC Villa.
Opolot, a left-footed center-back with versatility to occasionally play left-back, is known for his tactical awareness, strong 1v1 defending, efficient tackling, and aerial prowess despite his smaller stature compared to traditional center-backs.

Having gained significant experience in the Big League over the past five years, Opolot played a crucial role in promoting Bukedea Town Council to the Big League in 2019 and featured prominently for Blacks Power during their competitive seasons, narrowly missing out on UPL promotion in 2021. He was a standout in coach John Ongodia’s resilient ’13 commandos’ squad and later contributed to Blacks Power’s Big League title under coach Vialli Bainomugisha in the 2021/22 season.
Opolot has captained Kyetume for the past two seasons, demonstrating leadership and consistency in the heart of their defense. His imminent move to Mbale Heroes marks a significant step in his career, potentially bringing a wealth of experience and defensive solidity to the newly promoted side.
