Abbey Walusimbi, Senior Presidential Advisor on Diaspora Affairs & Ambassador at Large, met with H.E. Upender Singh Rawat, High Commissioner of India to Uganda, at the Indian Embassy in Kampala. The meeting underscored the importance of promoting safe labor migration and addressing human trafficking.

“I had the pleasure of meeting with H.E. Upender Singh Rawat, the High Commissioner of India to Uganda, at the Indian Embassy in Kampala. I was joined by Neeraj Vishwakarma, a committed humanitarian and social worker. Our discussions covered several important areas, with a strong focus on the welfare of Ugandan migrant workers in India and the fight against human trafficking, interests of the Indian community, and welfare of Indian workers in Uganda,” stated Ambassador Walusimbi.

The dialogue highlighted the need for legal migration pathways and skills transfer programs between the two nations, emphasizing technology, healthcare, and education sectors. “We discussed the establishment of bilateral agreements or frameworks to ensure the protection of rights and welfare of Ugandan migrants in India, aiming to provide a safe and supportive environment for them,” Walusimbi noted.

Further discussions explored promoting tourism through joint marketing campaigns, cultural exchanges, and improved visa facilitation. Investment opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy, infrastructure, and IT were also identified, with plans for trade missions, business forums, and investment promotion activities to bolster economic ties.

Both ambassadors recognized Uganda’s potential in medical tourism, proposing collaborations with Indian healthcare providers to enhance medical services and healthcare infrastructure. This cooperation aims to include professional exchange programs for Ugandan healthcare professionals.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthen bilateral ties through cooperation in tourism, investment, medical tourism, and education, among other areas.
