Niger | The Black Examiner – The leadership of Niger’s ruling military junta has communicated their inability to accept a proposed high-level diplomatic visit due to concerns over the safety of the visiting dignitaries.
Scheduled to arrive today, representatives from prominent bodies including the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), the African Union, and the United Nations were set to convene.
However, the coup leaders conveyed to Ecowas that the imposition of sanctions and the looming prospect of intervention by the alliance had ignited a wave of public discontent. This prevailing sentiment would impede the hosting of the delegation in an environment of tranquility and security.
The junta further underlined the closure of Niger’s terrestrial and aerial borders as part of their current operational measures.
Reports originating from the capital city Niamey indicate that a significant portion of the populace has greeted the coup with a sense of renewal, perceiving it as a revitalizing change. This sentiment prevails despite the fact that the deposed President, Mohamed Bazoum, had attained his position through democratic elections.
