Summary:

  • A joint police and army team is hunting for unidentified armed rustlers who killed four travelers in Amudat district.

A combined security team comprising police and army has initiated a search for a group of unidentified armed rustlers responsible for the fatal shooting of four travelers in Amudat district. The incident occurred on Sunday at 3pm along Lemusui road within Akonguyo village, Amudat sub-county. Despite ongoing disarmament efforts, the presence of firearms in the hands of criminals in Karamoja remains prevalent.

Mr. Micheal Longole, the Karamoja regional police spokesperson, disclosed that the victims were traveling in a black Toyota Harrier with registration number UBP 601Q, originating from Mbale. Despite investigations, no arrests have been made. Tangible evidence has been recovered, and witness statements have been recorded to facilitate the inquiry.

The bodies have been transported to Amudat Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations and eventual collection by their relatives. The motive behind the murders remains undetermined, and investigations are ongoing. It has been observed that the Karamoja community is increasingly sensitive to land-related issues, often assuming newcomers in fertile areas are seeking land ownership.
