A fugitive Ugandan national, suspected of murder, has been apprehended by police in Kirinyaga County after escaping from lawful custody. Acting on a tip-off from the public, officers raided his hideout in Kangai village, Mwea Constituency, on Tuesday. The suspect was swiftly taken into custody and transported to Sagana Police Station for questioning.

Kirinyaga police commander Andrew Naibei confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect would face charges for escaping lawful custody. Naibei expressed gratitude to the local residents for their cooperation in aiding the police to locate and re-arrest the fugitive.

The suspect’s escape occurred last week when he managed to flee from Kiamaciri Police Station, where he was detained pending murder charges. Subsequently, two police officers on duty during the escape were also arrested and will be charged with aiding the suspect’s escape.

Jason Mworia, the Director of Criminal Investigations in Kirinyaga County, assured that the apprehended suspect is now under tight security and will soon be brought before the court. Mworia cautioned residents against hiring strangers, urging them to employ known individuals for their safety.

The suspect had been in hiding since November last year following the alleged murder of his employer, Rose Muthoni Kariuki, in Kombuini village, Mwea. The victim, a 64-year-old woman, was found dead in her home, prompting suspicion among neighbors and family members. The fugitive, who had been employed by the deceased to work on her farm, went missing after the incident.
