Summary:
- Alex Mufumbiro of the National Unity Platform urges the public to focus on fighting corruption rather than just Matthias Mpuuga’s case. NUP replaces Mpuuga with Francis Zaake on the Parliament Commission due to controversy over funds allocation.
Alex Mufumbiro, Deputy Spokesperson for the National Unity Platform, urges the public to shift their focus away from Matthias Mpuuga, a corruption victim, and towards the larger issue of system rehabilitation.
Last week, NUP announced Francis Zaake as Matthias Mpuuga’s replacement on the Parliament Commission. This decision followed Party Acting President Lina Zedriga’s statement that Mpuuga failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding the controversy surrounding the allocation of 500 million shillings to him and other ruling party commissions.
Addressing the party’s decisions since Mpuuga’s recall, Mufumbiro emphasized the need to view the matter beyond Mpuuga alone, framing it as a comprehensive battle against corruption. He stressed, “The issue of the Parliamentary Commissioner should not be reduced to Mpuuga versus National Unity Platform (NUP). Rather, it should be seen as NUP versus corruption, abuse of office, and illegality.”
Mufumbiro clarified that holding Mpuuga accountable is part of the party’s responsibility as he represents them. However, he called on other parties, stating, “We lack the authority to hold NRM party members accountable, hence we urge the public to step forward.”
Regarding Zaake’s nomination, Mufumbiro highlighted obstacles in gaining the Speaker of Parliament’s endorsement, noting persistent efforts despite reluctance. He criticized the handling of Zaake’s case as indicative of a reluctance to embrace accountability and deliver public services.
